How would you describe minimalist fashion?
“Clothing or an overall look that is clean and minimal. It often involves a variety of polished, essential basics. Lots of sharp tailoring, structure, exaggerated silhouettes, menswear-inspired styling. Slightly androgynous. Never overtly sexy. There’s also the extreme end of the minimalist spectrum for the more fashion adventurous which I like to call the maximal minimalist. This girl typically favors everything exaggerated and oversized and accessorizing the same way.”
Do you think it’s a style that anyone can pull off?
“Minimalist fashion to the core means minimal, so yes. It's just a matter of keeping true to the the streamlined, minimal theme and not over-accessorizing.”
Does it mean that you can only wear black and white, or can you incorporate color, too?
“Minimalist dressing to me is more about the styling of the garments and not so much the color. It can range from neutrals to vibrant hues, as long as the silhouette and styling is linear and clean.”
What are some easy outfit formulas to follow?
- A crewneck T-shirt tucked into trousers or tapered-leg pants
- A simple A-line dress and flats or band-strap slide sandals
- A relaxed-fit blazer and trousers (or tailored shorts for summer), and a tank or T-shirt
Do you have any general styling tips or shopping tips to share?
“Since there’s a lot of tailoring involved, be mindful of fit and make sure your clothing isn’t too tight. That means no whiskering or pulling in the fabric along your figure. This defeats the minimalist style sensibility. A minimalist master is very particular about fit and knows that you can ruin the vision with ill-fitting items.”
What are some of the key foundation pieces of a minimalist wardrobe?
- High-waist tapered trousers
- Mule sandals
- One-strap flat sandals
- Classic trousers
- Crewneck T-shirts
- Thick hoop earrings
What are the some of the best stores and brands to find minimalist clothing?
- COS - This store is a sister store to H&M and the mecca of fashion-forward minimalist attire.
- ZARA - You'll always find classics here. I get my crewneck T-shirts here.
- Anine Bing - You can always find chic classics here. A little more of an investment as far as price, but these are the items you typically wear the most because they easily integrate into your wardrobe.
Can you suggest some celebs or influencers to follow for minimalist outfit inspo?
"I would definitely say I lean more toward minimalist fashion, although that isn't my rule of style all the time. Also, my friend Angela Fink, and Anine Bing, and Victoria Beckham."
