Micro-needling is one of our absolute favorite services to improve the texture and tone of aging skin. It's a bit trickier than your typical treatment if you're attempting this one at home, so we wanted to ensure that we learned all there is to know before we go puncturing our skin with a million tiny holes. (Yes, that's literally what we're doing here, folks!)

We realize this sounds a little intense, so we chatted with one of our favorite skincare experts, Kataryna Parciak, a medical aesthetician at La Suite at Union Square Laser Dermatology, to demystify this transformative treatment. Read on to learn what Parciak taught us about micro-needling and discover our favorite derma-rollers for mimicking this technique at home.

Q: What exactly is micro-needling?

A: Micro-needling therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and non-ablative procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of a micro-needling device to create controlled skin injury. As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin.

Q: What are the benefits of micro-needling?

A: Micro-needling is a great procedure that reduces scars caused by acne, surgery or thermal burns. It fades stretch marks, reduces fine lines and deep wrinkles, and tightens sagging skin. It is also a great procedure for hyper-pigmented skin.

Q: Who would be a good candidate for micro-needling?

A: Almost every adult is a good candidate for this procedure. Micro-needling is a good alternative to invasive treatments for people who want results without a long recovery period. It works great with skin discolorations, wrinkles, or dull skin. Fine lines can be improved, and pigmentation issues lessened with a series of micro-needling treatments. Good candidates are also free from any infections, eczema, and extreme keloidal tendency.

Q: What products do you recommend for caring for the skin after micro-needling?

A: Micro-needling is well-tolerated by patients, but dryness, scaling, redness, and swelling may be seen after treatment, lasting for several days or longer, depending on the depth of penetration of the needles. Moisturizers, antioxidants, and sunscreen are all recommended post treatment for several weeks.

Q: Do you have any tips for people who are interested in trying at-home derma-roller tools?

A: At-home derma-rolling is a great addition to an everyday skin care routine. Together with topical products, derma-rolling brings a home care routine to a different level. Rolling the skin with antioxidants and other active ingredients enhances the penetration and effectiveness of the products. Penetration increases up to 80%. At-home micro-needling restores the glow, uneven skin tone, and texture. I would recommend starting once or twice a week and then working up to five times a week if the skin can tolerate it. Apply serum before and after rolling the skin for better penetrations to prevent any scratches. It is very important to use good-quality rollers and skincare products, as we are introducing it deep into the skin. Clean and sterilize the roller regularly to prevent infections and change it every 3 to 6 months.

Beauty Bioscience GloPRO Regeneration Tool
$199.00

Best Overall

The GloPro tops our list because it truly offers the most. Created by former Miss Teen Texas and Beauty Bioscience founder Jamie O'Banion, the device's patented technology is complete with red LED light functionality and VibroTactile stimulation.

Thanks to these features, volume is restored from the inside out, resulting in a plumper, more youthful-looking complexion. For maximum results, utilize this tool at least three times per week with moderate pressure for at least 1 minute to properly stimulate collagen production.

Healthy Care Titanium Microneedle Derma Roller
$12.59

Best Budget Buy

One of the perks of at-home treatments is that generally, in-office micro-needling procedures can be costly, starting anywhere between $250 and $750. Healthy Care's derma roller just falls short of $15, but keep in mind that cheap in price doesn't necessarily equate to cheap in value; just ask the 450-plus Amazon reviewers rating this budget-friendly alternative four stars.

The device is especially great for beginners, with a variety of needle sizes to experiment with. Users attest to its gentle feel, but do warn that redness is normal, and can be alleviated with hyaluronic acid and an ice mask.

Environ Gold Roller CIT
Environ

Best Splurge

OK, we realize this one is a bit pricier than all others on our list, but there's a good reason for that.

"My favorite gold roller by Environ can last up to 5 years, but it depends on the frequency of use," Parciak told us. "Gold naturally suppresses bacteria — therefore it might be a good idea to invest in a more expensive roller."

Don't want to take our word for it? We're not the only ones who love this fancy roller.

Stacked Skincare Collagen Boosting Micro-Roller
$30.00

Skincare expert Kerry Benjamin launched the Collagen Boosting Micro-Roller to provide an at-home variation of her most sought after custom treatments. We can understand how, from a consumer perspective, all of these devices look the same, but Benjamin's derma roller is one of few curated by an actual aesthetician.

Seeking professional assistance results in high cost and limited treatments depending on skin type and traumas. Benjamin's tool can — and should be — implemented into your regular routine anywhere from three to five times per week. The process is simple: After cleansing, apply your favorite serum and allow it to set for a minute or two before rolling vertically, horizontally, and diagonally over skin.

Nurse Jamie Beauty Stamp
$50.00

OK, this one doesn't exactly roll, but the idea is the same. Nurse Jamie's exfoliating tool follows the same format of causing miro-injuries, you just need to swap the rolling motion for a stamping pattern and you're good to glow.

Koi Beauty Dermaroller for Acne Scars and Stretch Marks
$14.97

Koi Beauty's initiative is to ensure users obtain the maximum benefits their skincare products from anti-aging serums to moisturizers and essential oils.

As is the case with any derma roller, doing the research to determine which needle size is best suited for your needs is critical. From there, carry out the treatment on cleansed skin and conclude by applying serum high in vitamin C to soothe any irritation.

Skinmedix XL Micro Needle Roller 1.5 MM for Body
$36.00

Generally used for impurities like acne, acne scarring, and/or to stimulate natural collagen production on the face, derma rollers can be used anywhere on the body.

So what's the difference here? Skinmedix's Titanium Micro Needle Rollers offer a high-quality durability and are specifically designed for use on problem areas like acne-prone patches and stretch marks across the legs, stomach, and back.
